It’s fun working with Tara because while we both agree on a lot of things (WE LOVE SPREADSHEETS!) there are also plenty of things we have differing opinions on (she loves hook and loop, I’m all about snaps!) I think that works out well because if you ask us a question, between the two of us you’ll get a pretty balanced response! For a while now, Tara has been the one who loves her diaper sprayer, while I was the one who used liners because no matter what I tried, I always ended up splattering poop all over the bathroom. When I complained on Facebook about the mess I had made with the sprayer AGAIN, people started telling me I needed to try a Spray Pal. I’d heard of it before, and was hopeful, but skeptical. I’m sorry to tell you now that Tara and I will NO LONGER be balanced on this issue – I’m totally on board with the diaper sprayer love (provided that you have the right accessories, which for me means the Spray Pal!)

Materials and Usage

Spray Pal is made in the USA by a husband and wife (who teach during the day and work on the product in their free time) and a local production assistant.

It is comprised of a rectangular piece of BPA/phthalate-free polyethylene that is folded in order to create three panels. The panels snap together in the front to form a semi-circle. At the top of the back panel is a clip (similar to a binder clip) that is used to hold the diaper in place.

The clip has a textured surface to help grip the diaper.

I used the product for almost 2 months before taking the above photo, and during that entire time I thought the clip had actual pointy teeth on it to help hold the diaper in place! I had been concerned that it might damage the diaper, but it held the wet diaper in place so well that I thought it must be worth it. My mistake! Apparently it can be strong WITHOUT the risk of anything piercing your diaper!

The concept behind the Spray Pal is simple: you clip a dirty diaper into it, snap the panels closed, hold the whole thing over the toilet, and spray off the diaper. The panels help contain the poop splatter (so you can turn the water pressure up pretty high and get the diaper truly clean without making a mess of the bathroom!) and the whole thing folds up flat so that it’s easy to store between uses.

This is where I store ours – folded up and off to the side of the toilet, behind the toilet brush. There is usually a garbage can in front of the toilet brush (I had to remove it for the photo) so the Spray Pal usually isn’t very noticeable unless you’re looking for it. My husband didn’t even know it was there for quite a while! I put a little towel underneath it to catch any water drips, but you could always dry it off after use if you prefer. (And those are RUST stains on the towel! In case anybody was thinking that the Spray Pal left poop on my floor, the answer is no. That’s just a stained towel, which is why I chose it to be there in the first place).

Spray Pal has a product demonstration video on their website, but even after watching it, I initially had a number of logistical questions about how to most effectively use the Spray Pal in my own house. (What happens if you don’t keep a wet bag in your bathroom, like in the demonstration video? How do you get the wet diaper back to the diaper pail? What if it’s a pocket diaper – do you keep the insert in while you spray it? Or take it out before hand? Then what do you do with it? Where do you put the Spray Pal and the dirty diaper while you’re getting set up? Is there a trick to getting set up quickly when you’re dealing with a messy diaper, or is it best to collect the diapers throughout the day and then spray all of them at once in the evening when the kids are in bed?) I felt like there was a bit of a learning curve, not to using the Spray Pal itself (it doesn’t get much easier than fastening and then unfastening three snaps!) but to figuring out how to use it under specific (real-life!) circumstances.

The Spray Pal is a helpful tool, but (just like anything!) it’s not fool-proof (it’s probably MOSTLY fool-proof, but between the stomach virus that hit our house, my desperation to get the diapers as clean as possible since the washing machine was breaking, and my uncontained glee at finally being able to use the diaper sprayer at full pressure, I definitely made some mistakes along the way! But it was all in the name of giving the product a really thorough test!) After using the Spray Pal for almost 2 months, I decided the best way to explain the answers to all of my logistical questions would be just to SHOW you how I use it!

Carolyn’s Instructions For Use

Step 1 – Get set up.

Our changing station is down the hall from the bathroom, so I have what I call the “poop bucket”. I put the dirty diaper in the bucket and then carry that with me to the bathroom (I’m using a pocket diaper for the purpose of this demonstration, because it was the one I had the most logistical questions about. I also used a clean one, because I have SOME decency!) I put the bucket on my left so that I can block my son from trying to get to it, and set the Spray Pal on the top of the toilet seat. I open it up nice and wide so that I don’t bump into it with the poopy diaper on accident and make any more of a mess than necessary.

Step 2 (only necessary if you’re using a pocket diaper or something with layers that don’t need to be rinsed). – Hold the diaper over the Spray Pal (just in case the poop falls off!) and pull the insert out. Set the diaper on the Spray Pal and put the insert back into the poop bucket.

With diapers that have the pocket opening in the middle of the diaper (like Applecheeks) I skip this step because the poop is usually over the opening. The problem is that the insert will soak up a lot of the water from the diaper sprayer, which makes it heavy, and you have to be sure to hold firmly or else it will end up falling into the toilet (yup, did that a few times!) Those inserts will usually agitate out in the wash, though, so at least you don’t have to worry about pulling the insert out of the diaper later. You certainly COULD skip this step with a standard pocket diaper, but I don’t know why you would. It’s easier all around (and there’s less potential for mess!) if you take out the insert when you can.

Step 3 – Clip the diaper in place.

If you watched the demonstration video, you might notice that I orient my Spray Pal differently than they do while clipping it in. You can obviously do whatever feels most comfortable to you, which for me meant looking at the clip the same way I would a clipboard. Which end of the diaper you clip often depends on how messy the diaper is (did the poop go way up the back of the diaper? Then I clip the front) as well as the particular diaper you’re using (if I had a cover with a hemp insert, prefold, and fleece liner in it that all needed to be sprayed, I’d clip it at the front because the hemp insert doesn’t reach all the way to the back of the diaper). If all other factors are equal, I recommend clipping the front of the diaper because it is more narrow, and you won’t have to worry about the flaps drooping over and hitting your hand. The flaps might still fold over at the bottom of the diaper, but you can use the water spray to move them out of the way, instead of having to flick them off your wrist while spraying (and of course, I came to these conclusions AFTER taking the photos!)

Step 4 – Snap the device closed.

I like to do the top snap, then the bottom, and then I do the middle one last. I was initially perplexed about how to snap that middle one, but I was just overthinking it. You put one hand on the inside and one hand on the outside. I’d recommend being careful when you put your arm inside the device (being overconfident with any of these steps always led to a mess!) but there’s plenty of room inside that you shouldn’t get poop on your arm while assembling it.

Step 5 – Spray the diaper and (when you’re done) the inside of the Spray Pal.

This is the part that should be the most obvious, but where I had to learn the most lessons the hard way! The Spray Pal is still subject to the laws of physics, so you do need to be aware of the angle and pressure of your spray (if you get too excited and stop paying attention, it IS possible to get poop water to shoot straight up out of the Spray Pal like a fountain! But I think I just get WAY too into my spraying). So even though it is really, REALLY fun to be able to turn the water pressure up high and blast the poop off your diaper, try not to get cocky. It’s better to start off slow and then increase as you need to. I also found that it’s best to start spraying into the toilet (to get a feel for the water pressure) and then start cleaning the diaper at the bottom, because if something is bunched up or lumpy and you spray water at it, the odds are good that the spray will shoot back at you instead of flowing down into the toilet (learn from my mistakes!) If you start at the bottom, it helps flatten the diaper out. Ideally you want to hold the Spray Pal straight up and down, so that any backspray stays within the confines of the Spray Pal. I often found myself wanting to tilt it towards me so that I could see if the bottom of the diaper was getting clean, and if you do that be careful of where you situate your head in regards to the opening at the top of the Spray Pal. (If it’s a hard poop and it plops into the toilet, you don’t want to be angling the splash at your face! That was one of my grosser errors!) Also, try to be aware of how low into the toilet bowl you’re holding the Spray Pal. Once the toilet is full of poop water, it’s counter-productive to dip the now-clean diaper back into it! (I do that ALL the time, though!) If the diaper is absorbing water and getting heavy, use the hand holding the Spray Pal to help keep the clip closed firmly. Once you’ve gotten the diaper really clean, spray around the inside of the Spray Pal to rinse off any poop splatter. Be sure to angle the water so that it gets the area next to/behind the sides of the diaper, where the poop likes to hide and leave a mess for you to clean up later!

Step 6 – Put away your sprayer and unsnap the device.

I like to undo the snaps at the top, then the middle, then the bottom. You can do it one-handed while you hold the top of the Spray Pal with the other. I usually put the sprayer in it’s holder, flush the toilet, turn off the water to the sprayer, clear the line, and then undo the snaps. It sounds like a lot of steps, but it can be done really quickly. Maybe my toilet is just slow, but I can do all of that before the water is finished draining out of it.

Step 7 – Squeeze as much water out of the diaper as you can.

This was the step that took me the longest to perfect, and while I’m sure I’m not the first to figure out this method, I certainly FELT like a genius when I finally did! Tilt the Spray Pal onto it’s side, and put the top of it between your knees. Put your hands on either side of the Spray Pal, apply pressure, and slide your hands from the top of the device down towards the bottom (how far down you go depends on how much it dipped into the toilet and how squeamish you are. You can certainly get fine results even if you don’t go very far, but I always figured that I would be washing my hands when I was done anyhow, so I might as well do a thorough job!) Do this a few times until the diaper is no longer dripping wet.

Step 8 – Position the Spray Pal over the poop bucket, open the clip, and (if necessary) give it a little shake so that the diaper falls into the bucket. Put the Spray Pal back where you store it, and now you can go dump the bucket into your diaper pail! (If you keep a wet bag in the bathroom, you can follow the same steps to deposit it there without having to touch the diaper).

If, after you unclip the diaper, you notice that there was some poop that escaped onto the Spray Pal, it’s best to clean it up immediately (once it dries, it’s harder to clean up. You can just take my word for it! I made ALL the mistakes for you!) I keep a container of Clorox wipes behind the toilet so that I can easily open the Spray Pal up on the toilet seat (like I did in step 1) and quickly wipe it down. If you don’t like using bleach, you could wipe the poop off with toilet paper, and then disinfect the Spray Pal with whatever cleanser, wipe, or spray that you use. I give it a wipe-down every so often, but you could certainly do it after every use if you felt like it.

Survey Response

Here is how I would fill out a Padded Tush Stats Cloth Diaper Accessories survey.

Ease Of Use: 4/5

Worth The Price: 5/5

Would Recommend To A Friend: 4/5

Tips, tricks, and notes on my responses:

The Spray Pal was a lifesaver for me because the water pressure at the toilet I clean diapers at is REALLY high. There’s just no way to use a diaper sprayer without making making a huge mess more often than not. If you already love your sprayer or have a situation that is working fine, then I wouldn’t recommend you change it. But if you are EVER frustrated when using your sprayer because it makes a mess, then I’d highly recommend this product. Score for “Would Recommend To A Friend” was a 4 instead of a 5 to reflect the fact that some people may not need the product, and score for “Worth The Price” reflects that if you really need the product, you’re probably willing to pay whatever it takes to keep yourself out of range of poop water!

As stated previously, the Spray Pal isn’t hard to use in terms of assembling it or general directions, but figuring out how best to use it with your particular diapers and changing table/cleaning set-up was a bit overwhelming at first. Score for “Ease of Use” was a 4 instead of a 5 to reflect that. Once you’ve figured out the steps that work best for you, the whole process is easy (and once you’re fluent with all the steps, they can be completed surprisingly quickly!)

I found the Spray Pal easiest to use with pocket diapers, Snappi-d prefolds, and some AIOs (depending on the configuration of the inserts) because the poop is usually confined to a single surface and relatively flat. I found trifolded prefolds in covers to be the most difficult to spray, simply because the poop gets between the layers and it is more complicated to get all the surfaces clean. (Those particular diapers would likely be just as difficult to clean without the Spray Pal, though, so in that circumstance, a diaper sprayer may not be the most ideal cleaning method anyhow).

While the clip does open wide enough to accommodate most diapers, I wish it had the ability to open up a bit wider. It is possible to clip a diaper cover with a hemp insert, trifolded prefold, and fleece liner, but it just barely fits. It would be nice to have some additional room for really thick diapers.

The Spray Pal Facebook page was an excellent resource when I was troubleshooting some of my more random logistical questions (e.g., when my son had a stomach virus I had a few diapers that didn’t seem to have ANY clean area that I could clip, and I was concerned about getting poop up into the clip, where it would be difficult to get clean. I got a quick response when I asked for advice, and it was recommended that I pinch and grip the outer diaper material, with an offer to take a picture if the description was unclear). If you have any questions about the product or how to use it, I highly recommend asking there. It’s also a great place to learn more about the family behind the product, as their personal story is quite touching.

Are you an Elimination Communication (EC) parent? With EC, you try to potty train your baby at an early age. The problem is (or at least was for me), sometimes accidents happen–and it’s tough to get the diaper off. But yet if I have a diaper on my baby, boy is it a pill to take it off and put it back on, over and over again. That’s why I am intrigued by the concept behind the EcaWare Baby training pants (also called EcaPants). In this review, I am going to show you the features of these training pants, as well as show you how I would fill out a Padded Tush Stats Training Pants Survey based on how these training pants worked on my two kids.

Elimination Communication

So what makes this diaper REALLY unique is the belt that goes across the tummy. How this works is if your child takes a trip to the toilet, you undo the hook and loop, but the diaper still hangs on where that belt is.

A nice thing is the belt is very adjustable as well, so you have some flexibility with sizing.

Just a note, the skin just below the belt looks like his peepers, but I promise it’s not I worked very hard to make sure he was appropriately censored.

This was a nice feature, but since my children were older, it was VERY difficult for them to go potty on their own and figure out how to work the trainer with the belt. So I would only recommend this if you were going to do EC and would be there for every toilet visit (which is how the company had intended the trainers to be used).

Pocket Opening

The training pants have a pocket opening, so you can adjust the absorbency. There are inserts sold that fit in this pocket, that have 7 layers of absorbency-2 inserts can fit in these, for up to 14 more layers of protection.

Sadly this was just not big enough for anything that I had that I could stuff it with (I didn’t have the insert that is sold separately), which was a bummer since I really needed more absorbency with this. I was able to fold up a wipe in there, but it wasn’t enough added absorbency for either of my kids.

Closure

There is a hook and loop closure that fastens around the sides of the diaper. There is also a side snapping version.

This hook and loop closure is like none other and I really like the concept. There is binding around the edges so that it doesn’t curl. Another neat thing is that the closure isn’t in the FRONT, so if you have a child that unfastens diapers, but you like hook and loop, you might like this.

The closure also features laundry tabs, so you can fold down the closure and it won’t snag on other items in the wash.

Colors/Prints

The training pants come in a huge assortment of colors and prints, which is a great thing since it seems like so many training pants come in limited colors and prints.

Absorbency

There is very, very little padding here for absorbency. But they are made this way, the company refers to them as “One-Wet” training pants. They are meant to just catch a missed pee. You can buy inserts that consist of 7 layers of cotton to hold a little more.

My kids pee FAST and a LOT, so despite them having these on, pee trickled to the floor every time. Since I didn’t have the insert, I used a wipe folded up, and that helped a little, but I think the narrowness of the trainer made it difficult for the inserts to catch pee before the pee raced to the outside of the diaper.

Sizing and Fit

The training pants come in four sizes. Here is the sizing chart listed at the EcaWare Baby website:

I used the size Large on my kids and it fit VERY well. It is very trim. I also liked that I could customize the fit with the belt.

Survey Response

Here is how I would fill out a Padded Tush Stats Training Pants Survey based on how this worked on my two little ones. My son is 2 years old and used these from 18 months to 2 years. My daughter is 3. Both were 23-29 pounds when using this and are normal wetters, but FAST peers.

Price

$17.95

I do find the pricing to be pretty steep for something that you would [ideally] not use for too long.

Where to buy: To find out who carries these by going to www.clothdiaperretailers.com and type in “EcaWare”. You can see who carries them and compare things like shipping, specials, location, and more.

If you HAVE tried these, make sure you fill out a survey HERE

Although EcaWare provided these training pants for review, it did not impact the opinions reflected in this post.

When I got this cover, I was so excited about it that I immediately texted Carolyn a picture of it. So in this review, I want to walk you through the features of this diaper and show you how I would fill out a Padded Tush Stats Diaper Cover Survey based on how it worked on my two little ones.

Material

The diaper is made of polyester and covered in a TPU fabric. It is completely wipeable.

Flaps

The diaper comes with front and back flaps to help keep the insert in place.

I was SO excited about this, but sadly, I didn’t find that the flaps were large enough to really hold my inserts in place.

Colors

The cover comes in five different colors.

I really wish there were more! But I am a huge fan of the Raven (black) color that they offer.

Closures

The diaper closes using snap closures.

Well, I am not a huge fan of snap closures–but I know from statistical results that I am of the minority there. It would be nice if there was at least the option of hook and loop.

Sizing

The cover is one size, which means it is meant to fit the baby from birth to potty training You adjust the sizing using the rows of snaps in the front (called a “snap down rise”).

Double Gussets

The cover features double gussets at the legs.

This, along with the side cut of the cover, allowed me to get a nice fit over fitted diapers.

Price: $12.95

Survey Response

Here is how I would fill out a Padded Tush Stats Cover Survey if I were filling one out based on how this cover worked on my two little ones:

Notes:

It isn’t trim across the crotch, but I kind of like that because it allowed for great coverage for a fitted. The cover is more rectangular shaped when laid out flat (whereas most of the covers I own kind of have an hourglass shape). This fit over all of my fitteds with no problem.

I do wish the flaps would hold the insert in place. Because it didn’t do that, this was more of a night cover for us.

Of course you know I wish it had hook and loop closures! But I also felt like the snap closures poked out a little.

I literally had no leaks with this bad boy–so impressed with that!

It was way easy for my husband to get the cover over a fitted (which he normally fusses about!), but this worked great. It was just tough for him to use it in the day because the inserts flapped around.

My son is kind of between size settings right now—so I know there is bulk here! Plus this is over the super trim Geffen Baby Quick Absorbers Plus Insert, so there is extra puffiness here that wouldn’t be there with a more bulky fitted. (Oh and pardon the lack of a side and back view on my son. My sweet son is {this close} to getting fired as a diaper model!)

Where To Buy: You can see who carries this diaper by typing in “Incredibum” at the Cloth Diaper Retailer Database (www.clothdiaperretailers.com).

My son is going through a weird phase right now where many cloth diapers are fitting him pretty strangely in the tummy. So I was giddy when I found that the Modia Pocket Diapers fit him so well across the stomach, plus they are dang cute!

In this review, I am going to show you the features of this cloth diaper, and show you how I would fill out a Padded Tush Stats Pocket Diapers Survey based on how it worked on my kids.

Waterproof

The outside is made out of a waterproof PUL that comes in a variety of colors and prints.

What I love about the diaper is that (a) there are cute prints and (b) the tabs are a DIFFERENT color. That’s so different from all the diapers out there.

Stay Dry

The inside is made out of a stay dry suedecloth so that the baby doesn’t feel wetness up against his/her skin.

I personally am not a huge fan of suedecloth, simply because I find that my son is more sensitive to wetness with that fabric, but I know many of you like it, so it might be great for you!

Pocket Diaper

This is a pocket diaper, which means there is an opening in the back where you can put in an insert (which is what absorbs the pee).

I found that it actually fit my beloved Knickernappies SuperDo JUST fine for nap time. It was a little tight, but it still worked!

Sizing

The diaper is one-size, which means it is meant to fit the baby from birth to potty training. You adjust the sizing using the three-row snap down rise in the front. Snap it all the way down on the bottom row for the smallest sizing. Snap to the middle row for the medium, or have it totally unsnapped for the largest setting.

Smallest setting:

I always used the largest setting on my kids. My son is 27 pounds (a normal weight range for his height and age) and is so close to growing out of it, but that has been the case with almost all of our cloth diapers (I really feel for those of you with larger babies!).

Belly Elastic

The diaper has a band of elastic across the belly for a good fit.

Like I said before, this was my favorite thing about this diaper. The fit rocked across the tummy.

Snap Closures

The diaper comes with snap closures, which also features crossover tabs to allow you to get a good fit on a smaller stomach.

Of course you all know I wish it came with hook and loop closures, but as we found in our Features Survey, most cloth diaper users prefer snap closures. One neat thing about these snaps, though, is that they are all a different color. This way you can easily see what size setting you are on. This is GREAT for me, since I tend to start to get a diaper on where it is a little more over to one side than the other (in fact, this happened just two minutes ago when I changed my son’s diaper). But with this diaper, I just know what setting my son is on, so if I am setting it on a different color setting than what I am used to, I know I am doing something wrong (me? Wrong? That NEVER happens…). Another thing is how the snap closure colors are different and match the print. I love this!

Insert

The diaper includes 1 hemp fleece insert and 1 bamboo liner/doubler

This insert is VERY trim. It is long, so you fold it in half. I actually folded it in half, and then folded it over a bit more in the front so that there were 4 layers of absorbency at the front of my son. It is so nice that you can adjust the absorbency with this. I did not find that the liner/doubler added much more absorbency to this, but I found this diaper to be pretty absorbent on its own (for daytime use).

They are a “Made in the USA” company. Everything from the cutting materials, putting in snaps, and all the sewing is done by moms in Michigan.

Price: $21.95

Survey Response

Here is how I would fill out a Padded Tush Stats Pocket Diapers Survey based on how it worked on my two kids. My 2-year old son is of normal build and weighs 27 pounds. My 3 1/2 year old daughter is skinny and weighs 29 pounds (she uses diapers for naps and nights). Both are normal wetters.

Notes on Responses:

Absorbency rating is for daytime use (excluding naps)

Worth the price–this is tough. It is really cute and functional, but if you have a larger baby it might not last as long. If you do have a larger baby, you might want to check out our chart that sorts cloth diapers by their rise height and crotch width.

My husband (the skeptic) wasn’t a huge fan of the snaps or with stuffing–but I know many skeptics out there don’t mind!

Nap use: It didn’t work well as is (clothes were damp), but I added a microfiber insert and it worked perfectly

Night Use: It didn’t work too well as a night diaper as-purchased, but when I added a SuperDo it worked much better. We did experience minor dampness at the legs (not enough to get clothes wet, but it was on the outside of the diaper).

The diaper is VERY trim. Please note that I rarely dole out a “5″ to any diaper. I think the one diaper that gets my hoots and hollers for being a 5 is the Geffen Baby Quick Absorbers Plus insert.

While I was there, I made a handy-dandy handout to share with attendees. In this handout, I break down the top-scoring diapers at Padded Tush Stats. Since the event, we’ve had many of you request a copy of this handout. You can go HERE to download a copy of it, but I will also copy the information in here.

Below are the top-performing diapers based on thousands of survey responses at www.paddedtushstats.com (you can fill out surveys on cloth diapers you have tried HERE. Those responses go towards detailed statistical reviews).

Diapers rated on a 5-point scale based on criteria such as trimness, fit, absorbency, night/nap use, worth the price, etc. Scores converted into percentages.

We frequently update statistics on our diapers and you can always sort the results based on your baby type. Just go to the “Stats” section at the top of our site and select the kind of diaper you are looking for.

Screenshot of where you can find out the latest statistics on different cloth diapers.

You can purchase the diapers by typing in their name at our ClothDiaper Retailer Database. It will show you who carries the diaper and you can compare things like shipping, location, and even the current sales going on! We would love it if you use that database every time you shop, since retailers marked with three stars (***) give us a small percentage of your purchase to use towards buying diapers for reviewing and giveaways.
